Abuse and Neglect Prevention
Each year, children die from accidental fires and gunshot wounds that happened when they were left unattended. Others perished from abuse at the hands of an angry or frustrated caregiver. These deaths could have easily been prevented.
What you can do:
- Never leave young children alone at home. Take them to a neighbor or call a friend or family member to watch them. If necessary, take them with you – it’s a safer alternative than leaving them at home alone.
- Ensure any guns in your home are secured with a gun lock. Store guns and ammunition separately. Teach children if they discover a gun to “Stop. Don’t Touch. Leave the Area. Tell an Adult.”
- Never shake a baby – it can result in severe injury or death. And don’t touch your child out of anger. Give yourself a time-out. Go to another room. Take deep breaths to calm down. It’s okay to ask for help.
